Since we were unable to make it up to Moscow this week, we decided to enjoy a quick vacation in Colorado. We booked two nights in Alamosa (near the Great Sand Dunes) and two nights in Cortez (near Mesa Verde) and kept everything else very "loosey goosey."
On Thursday, we visited the
Great Sand Dunes National Park. Neither of us had ever been there before, so we weren't sure what to expect. In the end, we had a blast and wondered why we hadn't visited there before.
We spent several hours walking up and down
Medano Creek. The water was only a few inches deep and warm!
We played jump rope with a long root we found.
The girls had fun playing in the sand.
Ty and I hiked up to the top of
High Dune- (it is the highest one behind me.) It took us about an hour to get up to the top. It is hard work to take a step forward and slide back six inches with each step. Coming down was MUCH faster! We ran straight down.
We made it to the summit!
On the way out of the park, we found
Zapata Falls. It was a fun, quick hike into a beautiful little stream. I stayed behind with Aly, while Les took the other kids on a hike in the stream through a crack in the rocks. It opened up into a cavern with a 25 foot waterfall- pretty awesome.
