A recap of our recent journey

We took a little trip last week. Here's a brief recap.

Lake Arrowhead - Stayed the night near Lake Arrowhead in the mountains above San Bernardino. An excellent little place above the smog that feels much more like a cabin gettaway than a full time house.

Disneyland - Very enjoyable when it is overcast and cool. Fast Pass + friend's baby = almost no waiting in line.

Visited G-ma Backlund's grave and mom's old house in Torrance. Nice to put an actual image with the mental image. I don't think I'd been there since we went as kids.

Manhattan Beach - Not enjoyable when it is overcast and cold.

Venice Beach Boardwalk - Very similar to a 3rd world country. Filthy, lots of loitering and marijuana available from the "Doctors" at the clinics on every block. They told Kelly she'd probably qualify for a prescription with her broken foot. The visit was mostly redeemed by dinner at a nice little Italian restaurant where the whole restaurant sings "That's Amore", the song that goes, "When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie...." every half hour and cheerily toasts with their glasses of water, wine or whatever they're drinking.

San Diego - Enjoyed visits to Old Town, Balboa Park and International Hospitality Houses, and Coronado Beach (still no sun for Kelly as we went in the evening)

Tijauna, Mexico - Much more Mexican than I thought it would be. Who knew an arbitrary line could create such a difference in a matter of a few hundred feet. Business was slow because of the recession and fears of violence. Many shops were closed and we only saw 10 or 15 other Americans the whole time we were there. Ate some great tacos de cabeza, lengua and tripa (actually Tripa was slightly nasty). Also ate some great watermelon srinkled with chili powder and lime juice. Never would have thought of that combination myself, but it was actually pretty good.

I think that covers the highlights. We had a great time and managed to stay with family (our friend's aunts and uncles) the whole time so we escaped without a hotel bill.
