They are a big ugly fish with big teeth and are kinda finicky when it comes to catching them. The method we used was to bait a large treble hook with a smelt (6" skinny sardine looking fish) and let it hang about 24" below a very large bobber. The Pike grab the smelt and pull it under. They take their time and will run with it for quite a ways before they actually get the hook in their mouth. It's a little nerve racking to watch your bobber disappear for 2-3 minutes and hear your reel running line out a mach 2. The fun part comes when they jump and you have to actually use some technique to reel them in without breaking the line (we only lost one to a broken line).

My fish. The dock boards are 2"x6" so that gives you an idea of the size.
My fish is the one on top. The other fish is the one my friend caught. He cooked them up over the fire pit and they really didn't taste that bad. Yes we used a tie-down for a stringer because that was all we had.
